At Sapa Spa, we are focused on your wellness. Infrared saunas provide numerous health benefits, plus they just make you feel good. What is an infrared sauna? Rather than use steam or the traditional “box of hot rocks” heating elements, the infrared sauna heaters use the infrared spectrum to promote relaxation and other wellness benefits. In an infrared sauna, the air temperature is less important than the quality of the infrared heat. As your body absorbs the infrared heat, this will increase thermal energy inducing a deep and relaxing sweat. Ultimately, the infrared heats your body from the inside out, instead of outside in. Unlike a traditional sauna that operates at 150-195 degrees, the infrared sauna operates between 120-150 degrees. You will get all the relaxation benefits of the traditional infrared sauna along with the increased health benefits that infrared offers all at a much more comfortable temperature.
The infrared sauna provides numerous health benefits. It triggers vasodilation - our blood vessels relax and widen. Vasodilation triggers a cascade of physiological responses: decreased blood pressure, increased blood circulation, more oxygenated blood flow, increased nutrient delivery, a decrease in swelling, inflammation and pain. Range of motion is improved with the increase in muscle flexibility and recovery. With a more efficient waste and toxicant removal, the body experiences accelerated healing, better metabolism and boosted immune function.
Additionally, the infrared sauna has a built in chromotherapy light that has a variety of different benefits depending on the wavelength. Below is a description of each wavelength and the benefits:
1. Red: activates circulatory and nervous systems
2. Strong Green: Provides anti-infectious, anti-septic and regenerative stimulation.
3. Strong Blue: Lubricates joints. Helps address infections, stress, nervous tension.
4. Orange: Energizes and eliminates localized fat. Helps address asthma and bronchitis.
5. Green: Acts as a relaxant.
6. Blue: Stimulates muscle and skin cells, nerves and the circulatory system.
7. Strong Yellow: Strengthens the body and acts on internal tissue.
8. Strong Indigo: Helps address eye inflammation, cataracts, glaucoma and ocular fatigue.
9. Strong Pink: Acts as a cleanser, strengthening the veins and arteries.
10. Yellow: Reactivates and purifies the skin. Helps with indigestion and bodily stress.
11. Indigo: Activates and eliminates impurities from the blood stream.
12. Violet: Relaxes the nerves & lymphatic system. Addresses inflammation and urinary illness.
In an infrared sauna, our bodies automatically exit sympathetic mode (fight or flight) and enter parasympathetic mode (rest and digest). The parasympathetic nervous system helps produce a state of equilibrium in our bodies. Everything relaxes, gets more flexible. You don’t have to force yourself to relax; it happens automatically. Let your body be your guide! Pay attention to your body and you will feel when you’re ready to end your sauna session. Infrared itself is quite safe. (For example, infrared is used to keep food warm, to gently heat premature babies in incubators.) If you ever don’t feel good in an infrared sauna, just get out. Start with shorter sessions of approximately 20-30 minutes. If it feels enjoyable, increase sauna session times. People with a heavy toxicant body burden – whether from disease, such as Lyme disease, internal bacteria, absorbed environmental pollutants – might have to start with shorter sessions.
